Broken Promises by Author Donna Zadunajsky"Broken Promises" is the second fictional novel I've read and reviewed by Author Donna Zadunajsky. Although it is a fictional murder mystery for the most part, the majority of story line is very true to life and one that many people can identify with in one way or another. Oftentimes, substance abuse whether alcohol or drugs, may lead to other forms of abuse. As so adeptly depicted in this novel, physical and emotional abuse usually follows toward a spouse. This inappropriate behavior is very difficult to embrace and will be the undoing of many a marriage as clearly demonstrated in "Broken Promises". This author paints a realistic and heart wrenching picture of the personal pain that is endured in this kind of living arrangement.
Clare Culback is the protagonist in this captivating novel. She is in search of more peace and contentment in both her married and personal life. Her husband Jim, has a big problem....he is an alcoholic who has systematically let his addiction begin to destroy their lives. After much turmoil and financial stress, Jim and Clare decide to pull up their roots in Ohio and start fresh in Naples, Florida where Jim's mother and stepfather reside. This is a major decision for them as they pack up their belongings and move with Kayla, their young pre-school daughter and only child.
Upon their arrival, luck would have it that they quickly find employment and a simple condo to rent. Clare heaves a sigh of relief as she sees renewed hope in their previously failing marriage. However, just when life seems to be getting more on track...Jim reverts back to his old self. His beatings, lies, and cheating habits find their way back into their relationship and Clare is beside herself with grief. She can no longer live like this...not only for her sake, but for Kayla's as well. As she is about to leave her husband and their troubled relationship she makes a surprising discovery...and this discovery seems to threaten her very life. She finds a notebook in the seat of their sofa that makes no sense to her. It contains notes in Jim's handwriting about a murder. Who is Shannon Crumb? How is she connected to Jim? Is Jim capable of murder? So many questions...so few answers. With the appearance of Detective Blarks on the scene, Clare is about to make another surprising discovery. This book is an excellent read. I could not put it down. Anyone who has ever been with or currently may have a problem with Alcohol/drugs or loves mysteries will find it very interesting and exciting. Don't pass this one up!
Broken promises was an excellent book. It took a complete twist at the end and left me amazed with who the killer really was. I am very impressed because most books I can normally predict the end of by mid book. I was not able to predict the end of this. A very good read!!!
I wanted to give this book *zero* stars, but that possibility does not exist. This was one of the worst novels I have read in a long while. It was very poorly written. The plot was not well thought out,the characters were sketchy. What can I say? I am shocked that an editor actually read it and a decision was made to print it. Caveat emptor.
An intriguing mystery by a promising new writer, BROKEN PROMISES tells a character-driven story that will keep you guessing until the very end.
A great book, could not put it down. This book should be on the best sellers list. I recommend it to anyone who loves a good mystery.
Broken Promises is a look into what it is like living with an alcoholic. You want to believe that it's the last time he will drink, you want to believe it's the last time he will cheat on you. But when is it enough. While some think Clare is weak I found her to be pretty strong. How easy it would be to just lay there and cry. Instead she starts her own business cleaning houses and takes care of her daughter. There was some twists towards the end that I didn't see coming and I wish we could have had a little more into the story of Detective Blarks and Clare. It just seemed kind of thrown in there to me. I give it 4 stars because of the poor editing. There are parts in the book where you really have no idea who is talking and it gets confusing. I think the prologue and the epilogue was a nice touch. All in all a good read and one that I would recommend. I received this book from the author for an honest review.
A woman discovers that her husband has gone back to his drinking and cheating in this tale set in Florida. There is also a vicious killer at large. I didn't much like the story but others may get more out of it than I did.
In BROKEN PROMISES Clare and Jim lose their house in Ohio and move with their young daughter to Florida. However Jim is quickly back on the drink he'd told Clare he'd forsworn. He loses his licence for driving under the influence, he's got fines to pay, he's staying out nights, is occasionally violent and lies to his wife, who tolerates this abusive behaviour for no reason I can see. Jim's income helps pay the rent, but he costs far more than he earns and he doesn't keep any job for long. When Clare is fired she opens a cleaning business and soon has many clients, in many ways the total opposite of her husband. They have nothing in common and we are not told why they married. The daughter I'm afraid is a nonentity, without much personality or participation.
A young woman is murdered on a beach and Jim, with his philandering ways, is implicated, but Clare can't believe the worst about him and turns to a church where she gets encouraged to join a support group for families of drinkers. Jim gets a tax rebate and instead of paying bills decides to start payments on a motorbike. The couple never talk their lives through. Just when Clare starts saving up to leave, matters take a turn for even worse.
BROKEN PROMISES is a first adult novel from Donna Zadunajsky, who has written children's books, and I wish she had written something less depressing. I did not identify with any of it, but perhaps it could help some readers to see their own lives more clearly. The message of getting help from a support group, especially when Clare was away from her own family, was positive. The crime element does not enter early, so it is just a story of a miserable marriage. From the start the writing is mainly tell instead of show.
